IN MEMORIAM

|
She was really too young to die. Thanaa Holt was a loyal Young Skal member for years, and an excellent travel agent, But, above all, she was a lovely person.
|
She fought her cancer bravely, but to no avail. She will be greatly missed. |

EDITOR'S NOTES
A recent trip down the Garden Route showed all too clearly how hard tourism has been hit in that region. Too many beds? Too costly? Or is it just that we have international fewer tourists, with less time and less money? Or a bit of all of those? Perhaps the Garden Route is no longer sufficiently Garden – like.
Government figures are useless, but the evidence is clear. However, the weather was magnificent, and I had good look at all the latest extensions of the Addo National Park, which is looking superb. I also filmed my first ever aardvark-a major triumph!
Thanks to those of you who cheerfully accepted serious fines (R10!) for not wearing badges at lunches. Let's see if we can manage to take them out of bags and off other frocks for the next time, and remember being pregnant is NOT an excuse! The purpose of them is to identify yourself to those who don't know you-or in the case of some of those of us with greyer hair, to help to remind us who the heck everyone is!
The Committee has been doing amazing things over the last months. All the stuff that you read about and enjoy has taken many hours of organization and dedication-this Club is indeed fortunate to have such a splendid bunch always prepared to get stuck in.
See you around

SKÅL INTERNATIONAL
Skål, founded 1934, is a professional organisation of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry. Its members, the industry's managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest , AND doing business amongst friends. |

BRANDING

The corporate BRANDING sales are going very well-the concept allows members to promote themselves at a low cost while helping to keep general subs down, so its all good. But, to make it successful, sponsors will need your support. Lunches are available right now for R1500 each-what a BARGAIN!!!
CHRISTMAS
NO!!!! Yes, really, time to get ready-our date will be the 9 December. Put in diaries.

DUCKS - A Historical Tale
 |
Nearly half the available quackers have been sold, and we expect the rest to follow, so we are looking forward to a MASS swim out towards the end of the year, when they will be set free.
And, here is a fascinating bit of irrelevance. On 10 Jan 1992, 29 000 similar ducks escaped when their container was washed overboard in the Pacific. |
They circled the Pacific, and started to amaze ocean researchers as they arrived on various scattered shores. Some, astonishingly, went very slowly via the pack ice around the NORTH of Alaska, and ended up on the eastern US coast, while others started landing on UK beaches in 2002. At that point, they had become so valuable to science that a reward of fifty pound per duck was offered, next newsletter will update this oceanic blockbuster! |

ON LINE AUCTION

As always, huge thanks are due to Dominic and TIR for helping out so much and to those who gave so generously. Carol Bayne has now achieved a total of nearly R40 000, most of which will be going to charity. Many thanks to all the bidders-we hope that you enjoy the prizes. |

ECO Tourism Update
 |
Well, this year South Africa didn't win anything at the World Congress-remember, last year we won in 2 categories with Ikwattu and Streetsmart. But we will be trying again-any members know of any possibilities? It is a rather prestigious competition.

On National matters; Cape Town will be hosting the AGA/1st Bi-annual, which avoids ITB and will be on 16-18 March, 2012.

NEW VENUES
 |
If you have an idea for an interesting venue for lunch or anything else, do please mention it to a Committee Member. |
We are spreading ourselves around quite nicely, but new venues are always welcome. We now also include Golf Course management as well as restaurateurs involved in the tourist trade-we are pleased to have a couple of the latter now joining us.
YOUNG SKÅL
 |
Thanks to the new team, the kids are going well - their next event will be at the 12 Apostles later this month. Watch this space. |
WORLD CONGRESS
World Congress is hosted by Skål Turku. Details are on the www.skål@skål.org website re registration + pre & post congress tours. Please advise Anne whether you will be attending congress in order that she can add you to the S.A. contingent list.
Jan Sunde (past World President) has organised an excellent 6-day post-congress cruise of the Norwegian Fjords from Kirkenes (on the Russian border and high above the Arctic Circle) on Hurtigruten's newest ship, MS Trollfjord. Anne has the itinerary, cabin details and cost. The NOK/ZAR has a favourable rate of exchange
