SKÅL INTERNATIONAL - CAPE TOWN - No. 109
FEBRUARY 2011

EDITOR'S NOTES

Your committee has been very busy keeping the Club in a healthy state-and hence keeping our subs under control. We look forward to an infusion of new Committee members after the AGA to help the existing group.

We have some fun things to look forward to. In November we will be all around a large pool somewhere running the Duckathon, with loads of little yellow duckies competing. Each one will be numbered-and from now on you will be able to stake your claim by buying one. We have been informed that our Treasurer Philip has swim(float?) tested a flotilla of duckies in his bath, and reports success. (The mind boggles!) On May 27 the Skål Golf Day will be happening at the Stellenbosch Golf Club-details coming soon. In June we hope to be running the Amazing Race again, and there will a good sprinkling of other functions. And some GOOD news-Budget Car Hire have sponsored new raffle tickets, with BIG numbers!

In members news below see a new plan for encouraging new entrants, and in the meanwhile we hope to see a huge turnout for the AGA-remember, it's YOUR Club!

See you around
Tim Sale

SKÅL INTERNATIONAL
Skål, founded 1934, is a professional organisation of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry. Its members, the industry's managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest , AND doing business amongst friends.

BRANDING

The corporate BRANDING sales are going very well-the concept allows members to promote themselves at a low cost while helping to keep general subs down, so its all good. But, to make it successful, sponsors will need your support. Lunches are available right now for R1500 each-what a BARGAIN!!!

MEMBERSHIP 2011

Huge thanks to those who paid their 2011 subs - the list and monies have been transferred to the Secretariat in Spain via our National Treasurer.

YOUNG SKÅL

Nothing to report so far this year except that its still growing!

MEETINGS

On February 8th we had a very good turnout at a new -to -us venue, the Upper Eastside Hotel, Observatory. Obz/Woodstock aren't exactly world famous as tourism hubs, but this one looks good and seems to be working well. And what a nice surprise, really-vast amounts of parking, very friendly and competent staff, and they even managed to do very clever things with chicken!
Thanks as usual for prizes to all who contributed, including
Lorna Simone, Thompsons; Joy Strydom, Rovos, Louise Rohner, Upper Eastside; Anne Lamb, Skål; Anja du Plessis, African Luxury Brands;

MARCH
This is the Club Annual General Assembly, to be held on Mar 8 at the Garden Court, Eastern Boulevard. It's also an opportunity for us to thank the hotel management for looking after the Committee all the year round.

The format will be the AGA followed by lunch. Notice, Agenda and Nomination for Committee has been sent out.  Please make every effort to attend as this is your forum to discuss matters and make suggestions.

APRIL
On 12 April we'll be heading to the sea again, for lunch at PURE, Hout Bay Manor. Another new spot for Skål-all good for us, and we hope good for the venue.

MAY
Lunch gathering will be at the Cape Milner Hotel on the 10th.

NATIONAL ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLIES

This will be hosted by the Cape Winelands Club on the weekend of 25-27 March at the Straightway Head Country Hotel, Somerset West.   Please contact Carol Maclennan 083-306-8466. cmaclennan@mweb.co.za, for details.  Otherwise contact Anne Lamb.

ECO AWARDS - now renamed SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN TOURISM!

After our successes last year, we are looking for possible entrants for 2011-any bright ideas out there?

MEMBER NEWS

We are doing fine, but new members are always welcome-the nature of our various industries does lead to a lot of personnel movement. So, a SPECIAL offer is out there now-members recruiting new members who are approved by the Secretariat during March/May will be eligible for a separate draw in June. The prizes? We'll let you know...

MEMBERS INDUCTIONS

At the February function, the following were inducted:

Lucia Davadoss, G.M. Hout Bay Manor,
Bronwen Wetton, Manager, TCD Trust,
Olga Williams, Mktg. Mgr.r Nguni River Lodge

Welcome to all!

ITB

We wish those members participating in ITB every success and bon voyage.

NEW VENUES

If you have an idea for an interesting venue for lunch or anything else, do please mention it to a Committee Member. We are spreading ourselves around quite nicely, but new venues are always welcome. We now also include Golf Course management as well as restaurateurs involved in the tourist trade-we are pleased to have a couple of the latter now joining us.
