EDITOR’S NOTES from down under
Indeed, your travelling editor is checking out Sydney before the Congress...well, vaguely. I am actually mostly here to meet my kids, 2 of whom are currently sailing round the world. They are thin and fit and well - the good side of bouncing around in a small boat! I had the pleasure of joining Melbourne Skållies for their monthly event, and a warm and friendly lot they are too, though Melbourne winter weather was anything but. Many of you will have been in these parts, many not, but for the Oz virgins heading this way for Congress, QUADRUPLE your budget! Costs of everything are totally scary in rand terms - don’t even think of converting each time or you will become thin like the kids! The Melbourne lunch, for instance, was over R350 EACH! Having had a good tourist view of Sydney, I do think that the Congress programme looks a lot of fun, and no doubt cheaper than doing it all yourself. And, having moved across to NZ, I will pass on the maybe useful info that for 3G users NZ Vodafone is very superior to OZ Vodafone. And on that, here is an appeal that I am sure will be shared by all regular travellers and laptop/Blackberry/Ipod users - PLEASE DON’T send HUGE files by email unless you have checked with recipient first. (By that I mean anything over about 500kb). Pictures of hotel bedrooms or huge logo files are not going to create happiness in the mind of the travelling recipient!
Stay cool and g’day mate
See you around

BRANDING

The corporate BRANDING sales are going very well-the concept allows members to promote
|
| themselves at a low cost while helping to keep general subs down, so its all good. But, to make it successful, sponsors will need your support. |

OBITUARY - JIM POWER
It was a shock to skål members world-wide to hear the news of the untimely passing of our dedicated Secretary General. Jim lived the true spirit of Skål and will be sadly missed. He had a great affinity to Cape Town as it was when our Club hosted the 1992 World Congress that he became a Director of Skål. Our condolences to his family and the staff at Skål International.

NEW VENUES
If you have an idea for an interesting venue for lunch or anything else, do please mention it to a Committee Member. We are spreading ourselves around quite nicely, but new venues are always welcome. We now also include Golf Course management as well as restaurateurs involved in the tourist trade-we are pleased to have a couple of the latter now joining us.
AUCTION
Driven by Carol Bayne, and with huge support from TIR-thanks again Dominic-the auction has been a great success, with more to come. We are currently on Item 6, comprising a getaway to the Casa Do Sol Hotel & Resort in Hazyview with car hire from Budget and flights by S.A. Airlink. To date the auction has so far realised the magnificent sum of nearly R30 000, which helps to keep club fees down and supports skål charities.

ECO TOURISM
We have several entries for the prestigious Eco Tourism Awards, to be announced at the Skal World Congress in October. Our club entries are:
Street Smart, Camino de Santiago Spring Clean Campaign, !Khwattu, Avis Green Programme and White Shark Projects.
