SKÅL INTERNATIONAL - CAPE TOWN - No. 109
MARCH 2011

EDITOR'S NOTES

So our AGM came and went-another year, oh dear. Anyway, congratulations to all the new office bearers, and in particular welcome to our new President, Vernon Kirsten and new vice President, Joy Strydom.

The Winelands Committee, as well as many helping hands from Cape Town, have been very busy with the Annual General Assemblies of Skål South Africa in the Winelands, and a summary follows below. By the way, the Cape Winelands Club is the second largest in the country-not bad for a fairly recent spin off from Cape Town!

The world is a pretty jittery place right now, with events- in Libya and Japan of particular -concern. I don't enjoy knowing that the recommended area of evacuation around the damaged Japanese nuclear plant would include all of us in Cape Town if something nasty happened to Koeberg, while as a lover of the Karoo, I simply cant believe that the creation of hundreds of gas wells with all the attendant problems of “Fracking” can be allowed. It seems to me that we have to go very much greener, very much faster, and in this the hospitality industry here and world wide must take a lead.

See you around
Tim Sale

Its members, the industry's managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest , AND doing business amongst friends.

BRANDING

The corporate BRANDING sales are going very well-the concept allows members to promote themselves at a low cost while helping to keep general subs down, so its all good. But, to make it successful, sponsors will need your support. Lunches are available right now for R1500 each-what a BARGAIN!!!

On 8 March a hardy bunch, which more or less met the quorum requirements of the Club, met at the HIGC Eastern Boulevard for the AGM, and an excellent and well attended buffet followed. The hotel really does look after us very well-thanks to all concerned.

Philip Morse as a committee member and Lee Botti as a dedicated member were outgoing President Enver's choices for President's Member of the Year award. Congratulations to both of you-well deserved recognition.

APRIL

On 12 April we'll be heading to the sea again, for lunch at PURE, Hout Bay Manor. Another new spot for Skål-all good for us, and we hope good for the venue. Seating is limited, so please book in good time. And remember. Accounting rule 1-members are fully, totally, completely and absolutely responsible to pay for their guests!

There is also the opportunity of doing a site inspection beforehand, so please advise if you wish to partake.

SKÅL INTERNATIONAL DAY

Officially is April 28th, but we have a holiday on 27th April so will meet that day, and call it our "Family Day". Meet from 11h00 in Newlands Forest , bring all your food and drink and children and stuff, pay your own entrance fees at the Gate, and the Club will provide the braai wood and a couple of handsome and/or Decorative Braai Masters/Mistresses! (Complaints about the handsomeness etc to be sent in triplicate after the event!). Particulars will be sent out shortly.

MAY

Lunch gathering will be at the Cape Milner Hotel on the 10th. We thought about moving it to either side of Indaba, but it has become a tradition to have a small but very enjoyable lunch when the hordes are in Durbs, so that's the way it will be. The Cape Milner has offered an excellent 3 course lunch, so please support them.

SKÅL GOLF DAY

This is on 03 June at Bellville Golf Club-Enver is running this one, so if you are either a golfer, or would like to sponsor prizes or holes, or are able to contribute in any way, please contact him. It's a vital fund raiser to help keep your subs down!!

ECO AWARDS - now renamed SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN TOURISM!

After our successes last year, we are looking for possible entrants for 2011-any bright ideas out there? To date Cape Town will be submitting 2 entries-one for The Tourism Community Development Trust and one for Uthando.

ITB

Welcome back to all those who participated in ITB-hope it was more than worth the effort.

NEW VENUES

If you have an idea for an interesting venue for lunch or anything else, do please mention it to a Committee Member. We are spreading ourselves around quite nicely, but new venues are always welcome. We now also include Golf Course management as well as restaurateurs involved in the tourist trade-we are pleased to have a couple of the latter now joining us.

MEMBER NEWS

We are doing fine, but new members are always welcome-the nature of our various industries does lead to a lot of personnel movement. So, a SPECIAL offer is out there now-members recruiting new members who are approved by the Secretariat during March/May will be eligible for a separate draw in June. The prizes? We'll let you know...
