IN MEMORIAM
Karl Twiggs was a Skål man to his core, rising from President of Cape Town club, right through the ranks to World President in 2003. He was a great guy, a gentleman, and we will all miss him.

EDITOR'S NOTES
Hallelujah! That was from a young American couple I met recently in the bush who had encountered what is currently the hardest to spot of the Big 6, a bathroom door!!! (these are now heading for extinction, and should be gazetted under the Cites Convention)
Why, oh why, do we make tourists go through all the open bathroom, open loo bit? Answers to Anne in triplicate. Apart from that, my recent wanderings once again illustrated what wonderful tourism products exist in Southern Africa, and what wonderful people live here. We are truly blessed.
Even SAA joined the act-the travels involved many flights, and all the experiences were excellent. I met several visitors from Europe who always come here for holidays, as they are treated so much better than back home-that’s really cool, don’t you think? In general, I think we have a tendency to worry about how bad we are, when we should be shouting very loudly how GREAT we are.
See you around

NEW VENUES
 |
If you have an idea for an interesting venue for lunch or anything else, do please mention it to a Committee Member. |
We are spreading ourselves around quite nicely, but new venues are always welcome. We now also include Golf Course management as well as restaurateurs involved in the tourist trade-we are pleased to have a couple of the latter now joining us.
WORLD CONGRESS
World Congress is hosted by Skål Turku. Details are on the www.skål@skål.org website re registration + pre & post congress tours. Please advise Anne whether you will be attending congress in order that she can add you to the S.A. contingent list.
Jan Sunde (past World President) has organised an excellent 6-day post-congress cruise of the Norwegian Fjords from Kirkenes (on the Russian border and high above the Arctic Circle) on Hurtigruten's newest ship, MS Trollfjord. Anne has the itinerary, cabin details and cost. The NOK/ZAR has a favourable rate of exchange.
MEMBER NEWS
Jytte Ferreira, husband Craig and sons (Cruise, Storm and Wilder) will be on a grand sailing adventure for the next 12 months. We wish them safe travels and look forward to having their news from time to time.
Welcome to new member Paul Paley, Director, Found Travel Portfolio, who was inducted at our May meeting.
BRANDING

The corporate BRANDING sales are going very well-the concept allows members to promote themselves at a low cost while helping to keep general subs down, so its all good. But, to make it successful, sponsors will need your support. Lunches are available right now for R1500 each-what a BARGAIN!!!

MEETINGS
MAY
The Indaba Lunch seemed to go off well this year, with the Hilton remembering to cook the food, always a plus. While back at the ranch, a group of 23 hardy souls enjoyed themselves at The Cape Milner. Young Skålleague Niall Bruyns, F & B manager of the hotel, pulled out all stops and offered excellent fare. Paul Paley was also inducted – Skål welcome!
At the lunch we handed Gary Pinchen food hampers for those staff members who were victims of the fire that raged the Straightway Inn to the ground. |

JUNE
On June 14 many Skållies will gather at Catherina’s at The Steenberg Hotel. We haven’t been there since Pa fell off the Bus, or even earlier, and we are really benefiting from moving lunches around. Skålleague Fiona Angelico has arranged for Dollar Car Hire to brand this lunch, so let's give her the support and encouragement she deserves.

ECO Tourism Update

|
Skål Cape Town has again submitted two entries for this year’s Responsible Tourism Awards. Uthando Tours and the TCD Trust are both leaders in the field when it comes to working tirelessly to support community-based initiatives.
The concept of ethical tourism is growing, and guests from various responsible tourism organisations around the world gathered at Indaba for the first time as a collective and attended a one day conference hosted by FEDHASA and City of Cape Town on the Friday before the exhibition opened.
Serendipity Africa is about to launch a new initiative called ‘Trees 4 Tourism, aimed at securing pristine forest eco systems. We encourage the Skål network to get involved.
Entry forms can be found online for the 2011 ‘Imvelo’ Awards, which are addressed to sustainable development issues. Go to www.imveloawards.co.za. After 9 years, Imvelo gets many applications from neighbouring African countries, as these issues are becoming increasingly important in a wider context. And we want to congratulate Helen Turnbull who has been appointed one of the judges for the Imvelo Awards. |
