EDITOR'S NOTES
Lifestyle. Eco. These are words that have spread insidiously from "Eco and Lifestyle Estates" into just about every website for just about any product or service, and which are in the same category of meaningless babble as "levelling the playing fields", "going forward" and similar. Please, pretty please, if you are designing a website, or doing some advertising, do come up with words that mean something!
My niece in England is now the proud owner of a country Inn, very historical (built around AD1550, give or take 50 years), and very foodie. They charge 30-35 pounds per person per night, for a 3-4 star room with large and modern bathroom. And can't get away with more. Which is probably the same price as, or cheaper than, the local rural equivalent-and that just brought home to me how very costly accommodation in SA has become over the last couple of years. Remember the days not long ago when we used to say "oh, but its so cheap in pounds, yen, Euros, dollars"? No more, no more. Of course that makes it easier to travel overseas, but that doesn't help rural employment and all the other stuff. But eating out is still excellent value, and so as long as visitors can fly here with airmiles, and stay with friends, then they can have a gourmet experience of note! Is there something wrong with this scenario?
See you around

Skål, founded 1934, is a professional organisation of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry.
Its members, the industry's managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest , AND doing business amongst friends. |
NEW VENUES
If you have an idea for an interesting venue for lunch or anything else, do please mention it to a Committee Member. We are spreading ourselves around quite nicely, but new venues are always welcome. We now also include Golf Course management as well as restaurateurs involved in the tourist trade-we are pleased to have a couple of the latter now joining us.
MEMBERSHIP 2010
The 2010 Membership cards have arrived-please contact Anne to arrange collection/delivery of your card, if you were unable to attend any recent function. Cards will be available at the October gathering.
BRANDING
 |
The corporate BRANDING sales are going very well-the concept allows members to promote
|
| themselves at a low cost while helping to keep general subs down, so its all good. But, to make it successful, sponsors will need your support. |
SKÅL INTL. WORLD CONGRESS
The 2010 version will be in Sydney, from the 07-12th Oct. We wish all those attending safe travels, have a good time. |

CLUB OF THE YEAR
Cape Town won South AFRICAN club of the year again. Period 2009-2010, with thanks going to Minette for compiling the CD. We have won Club of the Year for the World a couple of times too, so we are really quite a top sort of bunch!

MEETINGS
SEPTEMBER
Like many others I did several turns around the Docks looking for Panama Jacks, as for "security" reasons the area has been made almost inaccessible.
|
|
But a large crowd did eventually navigate it all and it does seem that the purpose of taking lunches to a variety of "new" places does work, as many members mentioned that it had been many a year since they had been to PJ's.
It was a noisy and fun event as usual, hosted by Cheryl and Robert Verbruggen of Cape Courtesy. Thanks to them for the wine, presentation and prizes-we hope that they achieved their goals. Unfortunately our PA guy didn't pitch, so shouting became the order of the day. |
|
|

OCTOBER
12 October, midday-make a date at the Taj-another super new establishment to anticipate with pleasure. Do note that the venue number is strictly limited and we suspect that we will be over booked, so if you don't book early, you will miss out. Invites will follow soon, with parking info.
|
|

NOVEMBER
Will be in town-final venue still TBA.
|

DECEMBER
This year Cape Town and Winelands will each be doing their own thing-so you have an extra Christmas function to enjoy! Cape Town will be celebrating at the Mount Nelson on 3 Dec-we haven't been there for yonks, so it will be a very welcome return. Diarize! |

MEMBER NEWS
At a glittering (not sure what that means, but sounds good!) function at Brooklands Guest House, the Committee presented Shirley Brown and Steffi Albers with their tokens and gold name badges, celebrating 10 years membership with Skål Cape Town,
Also at Panama Jacks, we were pleased to induct Tim Straw, the GM at Civair and to present Kitty Snyman with her Cape Town 10 year "memorabilia".
It's very satisfying to have so many 10 year olds in the Club.
