EDITOR’S NOTES
It has not been a good couple of tourism weeks, has it? SA seemed to emerge quite well from the volcanic ash saga, with many suppliers digging deep to help stranded visitors. But stress and financial loss has affected many in the industry. M**CH–careful now! -hasn’t earned many friends by handing back rooms and seats in large quantities, as well as misunderestimating (Quote G. Bush the Second) the ticket demand for the big cities. But closest to the SKÅL family was the Rovos disaster, and our sympathies go to Rohan Vos and his team. They have always produced a top product and have been the most constant and generous supporters of Skål. Hopefully it will not be long before the whole show is back on the road again.
I recently had the pleasure of staying at !Khwattu, the San education and cultural centre an hour up the West Coast. It offers insights into the tragedy of San history that really should be experienced by everyone-go for the day, go for lunch, but do go….
And then there is Indaba coming up-so, see you in Durbs!

MEETINGS
APRIL MEETING
We had our usual noisy lunch, this time at Mama Africa in Long Street, crocodile entrees and all. Parking proved no problem for most people, though one of our members was most unfortunately bashed in the traffic after, at some expense.
|
|
It worked well as a venue-one astonishing and very satisfying thing about our monthly gatherings is how many of our members are introduced to the venues for the first time. Excellent!
As always, heartfelt thanks to those who donated prizes for our raffle. Sincere apologies if anyone is left out on the list below - (Tim admits to losing the list, huge embarrassment!) :
Janet Waggott – White Shark Projects, Joy Strydom – Rovos Rail, Lorna Simone – Thompsons Tours, Veruschka Nel - & Beyond
Anna-Mart van Wyk – Pearl Valley Golf Estate
Helen Turnbull – Serendipity Africa |

PRESIDENT’S 2010 AWARD
CONGRATULATIONS to both Janet Waggott and Fiona Angelico on receiving the President’s Award for their untiring efforts in sourcing venues for our meetings and prizes to boost our fundraising for the Skål Florimond Volckaert Benevolent Fund and local charities.
Well done ladies!

SKÅL INTERNATIONAL DAY
40 Adults and 20 Youngsters gathered at Newlands Forest for a Braai/Picnic on Freedom Day. 27 April to celebrate this important day in the South African and indeed also in the Skål calendar. There was some serious cooking and picnic gear on display, loads of food and a good time was had by all. The weather was lovely, even with a tad chilly wind, so one could feel sorry for those in JNB being rained on.

TICE
The “Broadway Rocks” show on Sat 10 April at The Barnyard went well, and made some good money for TICE. Very well done to Joy and the team-it was the first attempt at expanding TICE beyond the annual event, so who knows where TICE will go?

MAY MEETING
Although many Skållies will be in Durban, we will be meeting at the ever popular Winchester Mansions for Lunch on May 11. So it will be select gathering, and
those are always fun! |
|
NEW VENUES
If you have an idea for an interesting venue for lunch or anything else, do please mention it to a Committee Member. We are spreading ourselves around quite nicely, but new venues are always welcome. We now also include Golf Course management as well as restaurateurs involved in the tourist trade-we are pleased to have a couple of the latter now joining us.
INDABA Gathering
Please join Skål Durban and Skållies from all over the world at the Hilton Durban Hotel, Polo room. The date- Monday 10 May, time 12:00 for 12:30, cost R 220.00 per person
YOUNG SKÅL
A large number of young travel types arrived at 15 On Orange, and enjoyed drinks, eats and a lot of chatting. For the older members present, it was great to see the enthusiasm of these highly competent young travel industry people. And there are lots of other things on the go- very vibrant, is Young Skål.
