16 June 2009: Skal South Africa National President Steve Pillai (right) presents prizes to Denver Naidoo, captain of the team that won the Skal Midlands Meander Car Rally on June 16. The successful rally attracted 46 competitors from the Durban and KwaZulu-Natal Midlands Skal clubs.

World Skal Day on April 28 was celebrated in grand style by Skalleagues in KwaZulu-Natal when Durban Skal members joined their friends of Midlands Skal for a car rally along the Midlands Meander route, ending up with lunch at the Blue Haze Country Lodge near Estcourt. Seen with their winning prizes were National Vice-President Dave O'Halloran (blue shirt) of Skal International Durban, his wife Janet (left) and daughters Megan and Shannon. In the foreground is rally organiser Adrian McWilliams, Immediate Past President of Skal International KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, who presented the prizes.

 

 

Whilst on a visit to Spain for a conference during April, the President of Skal International Natal Midlands, Bunny Bhoola (second left), took the opportunity to call in at Skal headquarters in Torremolinos where she was warmly welcomed by the Skal Secretary General, Jim Power (left). Bunny was accompanied by Jose Luis Quintero, President of Skål International Malaga, and Renée Kachler of the Costa del Sol Tourism Board (right).

 

 

A recent dinner of Skal International KwaZulu-Natal Midlands was held at Hawklee Country House on the Midlands Meander route when Skalleague and campanologist Jeff Lawrence (extreme left) took great delight in teaching his hand-bell ringing skills to (from left) Adrian McWilliams, Cheryl Callanan (Lynn's guest), Johan Barkhuizen, Lynn Tungay, Alison Kelly and Dick Jones. By the end of the evening, Jeff's students were able to give a reasonable rendition of Sarie Marais and other well-known tunes. There's always something out of the ordinary at Midlands Skal functions!

International Skål Club of the Year Award

During the meeting Shirley Brown, outgoing President of Skål International Cape Town, which won this year's International Skål Club of the Year Award, was presented with the National President's Award for 2007 by Keith Murcott, outgoing National President. Cape Town, 8th biggest club in the world, beat over 480 clubs worldwide to win this prestigious award.

Mr. Karl Twiggs President Skål International

Karl Twiggs was appointed President Skål International at 64th World Congress in Chennai India in November 2003.

Karl will be first world president of Skål International to host a World Congress in his home country in Durban 24th -29th October 2004.

The first national meeting of the year will be hosted in the picturesque Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands town of Howick during the weekend of 19 to 21 February 2010.  Accommodation is at the Midmar Resort near the town and a very informative and busy weekend exploring the area has been planned by the local Skal Club.  For further information please contact club secretary Dick Jones, tour.ed32@gmail.com
